Have you seen WebUrbanist? The urban photography blog has become one of my favorite sites in the last few months. The posts tackle the gritty elements of urban life and portray them in a holistic manner.
Urban Adventure Playgrounds are purposely designed to bring a little danger back to childhood play. No, there’s not any broken glass or toxic materials to be swallowed. But the occasional scraped knee or bruised elbow is acceptable in this environment. These DIY playgrounds are quite the eyesore: forts constructed of old tires and mismatched plywood; a shanty with a tin roof; and a treehouse that could have been drafted by Tim Burton. Some of the construction is done by children. Once the buildings lose their vigor, they are simply torn down. The building materials are re-used for the next mini-city.
This photo of Cairo is impressive on its own, but pay attention to the layers of development. As one row of buildings become dilapidated, another is raised. The contrast and history of urban development trends are clearly visible with ancient pyramids in the back and charred brick dwellings in the foreground. Taken from this WebUrbanist post.
